BurnPro3D is designed for use in fire mitigation by land managers and burn bosses to prioritize land for treatment, and plan and conduct prescribed burns. The platform is powered by the next generation WIFIRE Data and Model Commons. It provides diverse users a common ground for understanding risks and tradeoffs related to prescribed burns through detailed models of vegetation and fire behavior.

BurnPro3D uses a coupled fire/atmosphere model to capture the interaction between user-defined complex ignition patterns and environmental conditions. With support from the National Science Foundation, the BurnPro3D team is developing emerging AI techniques to transform the characterization of the fire environment, including dynamic site-specific three-dimensional fuels and winds.

The California Wildfire & Forest Resilience Task Force — which hosts the California Wildfire and Landscape Interagency Treatment Dashboard — is a state-federal collaborative effort that brings together more than a dozen agencies (federal, state, and private) to coordinate and report wildfire-resilience and landscape-management projects across California. The Dashboard offers an interactive, publicly accessible map of treatments — from forest thinning and prescribed burns to tree planting and grazing — allowing users to sort projects by region, county, land ownership, and more

California Interagency Treatment Tracking System

California Landscape Metrics (CLM) is a statewide, interagency-developed geospatial data initiative that consolidates and standardizes key landscape-scale metrics across California. The project brings together data from four former regional “Regional Resource Kits” into a unified suite of mapped data layers designed to support forest and landscape resilience. CLM was developed by a collaboration of scientists from the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Research Station (PSW), CAL FIRE’s Fire and Resource Assessment Program (FRAP), the Climate and Wildfire Institute (CWI), and researchers at several universities such as University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Irvine, among others. The data layers cover a broad range of landscape attributes — from wildfire hazard and fuel loads to habitat suitability, vegetation structure, carbon storage, hydrology, and social-ecological metrics. They are intended to enable land managers, planners, and decision-makers to assess current conditions, plan treatments or restoration actions, and monitor changes over time in order to advance landscape-scale resilience to fire, climate change, and other disturbances.

The High Performance Wireless Research and Education Network (HPWREN), a University of California San Diego partnership project led by the San Diego Supercomputer Center and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, supports Internet-data applications in the research, education, and public safety realms.


HPWREN functions as a collaborative, Internet-connected cyberinfrastructure. The project supports a high-bandwidth wireless backbone and access data network in San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial counties in areas that are typically not well-served by other technologies to reach the Internet. This includes backbone locations, typically sited on mountain tops, to connect often hard-to-reach areas in the remote Southern California back country.

HPWREN

The mission of the LiDAR monitoring program is to develop efficient methods for monitoring our natural and cultural resources and to provide effective decision-support tools for land managers. This project is a collaborative effort developed with partners from USDA Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey, Universities and the New Mexico Consortium. This multidisciplinary team seeks to integrate LiDAR and modeling techniques to monitor fuels and ecosystems and link fire modeling for land management decision support. The ultimate goal is to standardize monitoring across agencies with uniform language, methods and data analysis. 

IntELiMon: Interagency LiDAR Monitoring & Research Applications

LANDFIRE (LF), Landscape Fire and Resource Management Planning Tools, is a shared program between the wildland fire management programs of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service and U.S. Department of the Interior, providing landscape scale geo-spatial products to support cross-boundary planning, management, and operations.

The Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) distributes Near Real-Time (NRT) active fire data within 3 hours of satellite observation from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua and Terra satellites, and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard S-NPP and NOAA 20 (formally known as JPSS-1).
